What is the difference between free hulu.com and Hulu Plus? (from Hulu)

Posted: October 25, 2013 in Home Media

I searched for weeks for a good description of the differences between the free and paid hulu options. By chance I found this on their web site. I could not write a better description myself so here is what they say:

“The Hulu Plus subscription service is the first and only internet video subscription service to stream full current seasons and a deep library of back seasons of hit TV shows from ABC, FOX, NBC, and more, in HD, to computers, internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players, set-top boxes, mobile phones, and tablets, all for $7.99 per month. (To see a full list of Hulu Plus enabled devices, please visit: www.hulu.com/plus#devices )

There are three key areas of difference between Hulu.com and Hulu Plus subscription service:

Device access. Hulu.com is a free option for users who want to watch TV shows on their computers. Hulu is limited to the PC environment. Hulu Plus enables users to watch Hulu content instantly in HD (720p) to internet-connected TVs, Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, set-top boxes, iPads, iPhones, and many other devices. Content. Generally, Hulu.com offers the last five episodes that aired on TV, while Hulu Plus offers all current-season episodes from popular shows such as Glee, House, and Modern Family, and full series runs (all episodes from every season), including The X-Files, Arrested Development, Desperate Housewives, Battlestar Galactica, Monk, Psych, Saturday Night Live, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Ugly Betty, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and dozens more. Hulu Plus is also the exclusive source for the most comprehensive library of the Criterion Collection archive with hundreds of classic films.

Video Quality. Hulu.com streams in standard definition while Hulu Plus streams in HD when available.”

I recently got hulu plus but i dont have full seasons of revolution and arrow etc how do i get the seasons full

    • That’s odd. Hulu is pretty good about full seasons. I believe they should have all the shows of the previous season available. I haven’t had a problem with the two or three shows I watch. I have found the best place to get answers for hardware, programing and software is in the forums. The one for Hulu is http://www.hulu.com/forums/info.

  3. Anne says:

What’s the current monthly fee for Hulu Plus streaming and is there a site I can view what movies are available to stream & on DVD Thank you

    • Hi Anne,

Thebig difference with the free and paid Hulu is that unless you install Playon.tv on your computer you have to watch the content on a browser. Except if you have a Roku.com box. It let’s you view hulu.com onypur phone or tablet and send it to yourTV.

Thank You for your help 😃 Anne

Thanks for this! I’d been wondering what I was paying for! It should probably say that HuluPlus provides the complete seasons of MOST programs. Complete seasons of Tosh.0, for example, are not available.

  6. Amy says:

i’ve been wanting to watch the current season of a tv show. will I be able to watch the whole season from the dtart

  7. Karen says:

Some of the shows past seasons are being deleted because cable networks are buying the shows to air on their networks. Grimm only has the past 5 shows on Hulu plus because TNT is now airing Grimm. TNT shows are only available on amazon and you have to pay $1.99 per episode, which I am not going to do because why would I pay for something that I have already paid for through satellite subscription? Pay me now, pay me later…

  8. Anna says:

how do you get something to stream in HD. I stream HuluPlus from the Roku to my HD TV, but everything looks standard.

    • Anna, it looks like you are doing everything right. Very strange. Are you using a Roku 3 box or the XD? I am not sure it would make a difference. Like most other technology problems. you might try streaming from a different site. Try Youtube and see if you get HD.

      • Anna says:

I’ll try again to mess with it. Does HuluPlus always have so many commercials???? I’m on the free trial, watching TV shows on ABC, Fox, but I’m not likely to pay for it if there continue to be so many ads. Or does it depend on the network, shows you watch? Thanks for your expertise.

      • Nope. Commercials come with HuluPlus. If you got a regular old fashioned antenna you could get those stations for free! Get a tablo.tv DVR and you can record.

I use several streaming devices. RCA, NEO tv(Netgear), Roku. I’m currently on the 30 day trial with hulu plus. Is it going to take 30 days for me to see 1 episode of my favorite tv show?.. Everything starts fine, the commercials run, the network picture appears, the beginning starts, then it tells me there is a connection problem, please try again. I do and it does the same thing.I’ve checked all my connections.

    • Do you have the problem with any other streaming sites like You Tube? Google Ookla or speedtest.net. These sites tell you what your upload and download speeds are. If the speeds are what your ISP says they are then your connection to the internet is good. Then try calling or chatting with Hulu support and tell them your problem and the results of the speed test. Its a place to start. Good luck.

I had hulu plus but recently downgraded to the free version because most of the shows on hulu are on either my cable on demand or Netflix. The free version streams on all my devices. Tablet, android etc.
